Bohemian Velvet Bedspread, Washed Italian Theorem Painted, Excellent Condition, 102"w. x 96"l
This piece is rare and special not only because of the color, design, and condition, but because it's hand painted in a style called Theorem Painting, popular until the 1860s. Usually it's seen on silk blend bedspreads, or plainer velvets. This is probably not as old as the 1860s judging by its condition, but more rare, still, because the art dwindled after that date, so these are very hard to come by. I took a risk and washed this because it looked a bit dusty, and the really bright paint came off, leaving ghosts of images in what some would say is a far more tasteful look! The only damage from washing and drying was a bit of unwound trim, last photo.
The red is true deep brick red, with bright orange gold scrollwork on a silvery white/ivory background. Backing is a heavy cotton muslin, and fringe is that same bright orange gold chenille. Absolutely superb, perfect for any space you want to have a regal and bohemian flare.
